Why This Track Is Difficult
Turn 1: Downhill braking into an increasing-radius right that looks faster than it is—late braking leaves no runoff. Turn 4–5 complex: The slowest section sets up the entire climb through the esses; overdriving 4a destroys Climbing Esses speed. Climbing Esses (7–9): High-speed rhythm over blind crests—maintaining steering angle over a hill is a spin trigger. South Bend (Turn 10): Fastest corner on the lap; fighting to stay on track when too fast ends in the tire wall. Oak Tree (11–12): Turn 12 is tighter and off-camber than it appears; exit defines the mile-long back straight. Roller Coaster (13–15): Heavy braking on a steep descent—one continuous complex, not three separate corners. Hog Pen (16–17): Faster than it looks; compression at the exit sets front-straight speed. Best Car Classes for This Track
GT3 / GTE-style: Bread-and-butter VIR car. Balance rear stability for South Bend and the Climbing Esses with traction for Oak Tree and Hog Pen exits. Weakness: prototype closing speeds on the back straight if you defend too late.
LMP2 / prototypes: Entry speed through South Bend and the esses dominates. Must brake earlier behind GTs at Turn 1 and Oak Tree; strength is safe passes when slower cars leave room before braking boards.

Turn 1
Type: Heavy-braking right off the front straight; downhill, increasing radius. Gear: 2nd–3rd. Passing: Primary overtaking zone—lap 1, restarts, pit-out merges.
Braking: Straight-line priority on the downhill—surface can be slippery. Trail brake toward a long apex on the inside kerb; cannot accelerate until after the apex.
Line: Exit left half of track, then arc right to set up Turn 2 and Turn 3 braking.

Turn 2

Technique: Maximum throttle if the car allows; smooth lift for the curved Turn 3 brake zone—relax steering as you approach the flag station.
Line: Arc from right half of track toward Turn 3 outside kerb; advanced line uses the Turn 2 apex curb for minimum time.
Invalidation risk: Low if you stay on asphalt.
Common mistake: Hard braking while still turning; poor Turn 1 exit that forces a compromised Turn 3 approach.
Turn 3 – NASCAR Bend
Type: Medium-speed left; decreasing radius. Gear: 3rd–4th. Passing: Possible on the left in the chute to Turn 4—one clean move only.
Braking: Begin before the right-side kerb; decisive turn-in from within a couple of feet of the curb.
Apex: Long apex along the last half of inside kerbing; track out down the outside curb.
Invalidation risk: Moderate—green paved runoff outside the curb counts as off-track in officials.
Common mistake: Late turn-in that forces excessive slowing; overdriving a corner that tightens on exit.
Turns 4a–4b
Type: Slow left-left complex; among the slowest on the lap. Gear: 2nd. Passing: Rare—setup for Turn 5 matters more than fighting here.
Braking: Heavy straight-line brake into 4a with heavy trail braking—the most at any VIR corner. Stay left after 4a apex; do not track out right.
4b: Late turn-in after the left kerb ends; clip the protruding apex kerb, then eyes up toward 5a. Crowned camber reinforces the recommended line.
Exit priority: Left-side position for 5a—"the straight to Oak Tree starts at Turn 4a" for momentum cars.
Invalidation risk: Moderate on aggressive inside cuts at 4b.
Common mistake: Tracking out wide at 4a; hurrying 4b turn-in and destroying the run to the Climbing Esses.
Turns 5a–5b
Type: Right-hand setup corners before the esses climb. Gear: 3rd–4th. Passing: Low odds—compromise here costs the whole uphill section.
Technique: Resist early turn-in to 5a; one flowing arc from 4b exit through 5a and 5b. Partial lift at 5a apex can rotate the car if needed.
Line: Near left kerb at 5a exit but parallel before hitting kerbs—turning on kerbs here snaps the car. Heavy throttle from 5a onward if 4–5 were correct.
Invalidation risk: Moderate at 5b kerbs—unfriendly curbs, especially early/late in the day with shadow grip changes.
Common mistake: Too much speed into 5 that prevents reaching the left side; early 5a turn-in that kills Climbing Esses entry speed.
Turns 6a–6b – The Snake
Type: Flat-out kinks under the bridge. Gear: 4th–5th. Passing: Left-side zone after 6b—plan before the esses.
Technique: Straighten as much as possible; full throttle if 5a–5b were correct. Corners are not visible until near 5a apex—know the line from practice.
Line: Avoid kerbs; stay left under the bridge to set up Turn 7.
Invalidation risk: Low on asphalt.
Common mistake: Lifting unnecessarily; poor 5a exit that forces a lift when the snake should be flat.
Turns 7–9 – Climbing Esses
Type: Signature uphill right-right-right sequence. Gear: 4th–5th. Passing: None—too fast and blind for side-by-side.
Turn 7: Gentle bend from the right; stay left well after the apex kerb with the car parallel to the white line.
8a / 8b: Cross the 8a crest with wheels straight; long apexes along right kerbs. Rhythm beats aggression—smooth steering and throttle.
Turn 9: Right onto centre track, then immediately move right for South Bend. Breathe throttle only if mispositioned from 7–8.
Invalidation risk: High on kerb abuse—recent repave helped but crest spins remain common.
Common mistake: Maintaining steering angle over a crest; lifting mid-esses instead of fixing entry position at Turn 7.
Turn 10 – South Bend
Type: Fast cresting left—fastest corner on the lap. Gear: 4th–5th. Passing: Rare—if too fast, straighten and use the huge right-side runoff rather than fight the wall.
Braking: Brake while straight; minimal or no trail braking. Turn in as the apex kerb begins.
Throttle: Progressive power—track goes off-camber toward exit. Long apex along the first third of kerbing.
Invalidation risk: Moderate on exit kerb abuse; holding a bad line risks a high-speed spin into the tire wall.
Common mistake: Trail braking like a slow corner; early apex with corrective steering instead of using runoff.
Turns 11–12 – Oak Tree
Type: Uphill right-right onto the back straight. Gear: 2nd–3rd. Passing: Secondary zone on the short straight—inside at Turn 12 is a classic move.
Turn 11: Carry more momentum than you think uphill; brake into the hill. Arc toward track left, parallel to outside kerb at Turn 12 turn-in.
Turn 12: Tighter and off-camber—deliberate turn-in with trail braking. Patience on throttle until pointed at the flag station; exit downhill and off-camber.
Exit priority: Most important corner for lap time—defines the mile-long back straight.
Invalidation risk: High on wide exit past apex—classic four-wheels-off for overdriving Turn 12.
Common mistake: Over-braking Turn 11 then re-applying throttle before Turn 12; early throttle on off-camber exit that slides left.
Turns 13–15 – Roller Coaster
Type: High-speed entry into plunging left-slow left-left complex. Gear: 3rd–5th. Passing: Low odds—treat as one sequence.
Turn 13: Brake before the hill; use the descent to help slow and bend left. Stay left after the crest.
Turn 14: Sacrifice exit to set up 15—turn in before apex kerb, trail brake, hold line past kerb end.
Turn 15: Immediate left with aggressive throttle—compression provides grip. Track out second half of exit kerb.
Invalidation risk: Moderate on kerb cuts at 14–15.
Common mistake: Separate braking zones for each turn; over-slowing 13 and losing the compression advantage at 15.
Turns 16–17 – Hog Pen
Type: Fast right-left onto the front straight. Gear: 3rd–5th. Passing: Short left-side zone before Turn 16—otherwise defend on the front straight.
16a: Brake after bending toward apex; follow left kerb downhill with car straight. Turn-in for 16b at kerb end.
16b–17: One arc through 16b to Turn 17; partial throttle at 16b turn-in—no trail braking. Use the right-side groove at 17 if stable; full throttle before the outside cone.
Exit priority: Second-longest straight on the lap—WOT headstart beats one aggressive apex.
Invalidation risk: Moderate on wide 17 exit; pit entry is right on exit—signal before 16a.
Common mistake: Over-braking 16; lifting on the gradual front-straight kink when the car would carry flat.
Pit entry and exit
Pit entry: On the right as you exit Hog Pen (Turn 17)—signal before Turn 16a and hold a predictable line so following cars are not surprised.
Pit exit: Merges at Turn 1—traffic may be heavy braking on a quali lap. Blend predictably; check mirrors before contesting the front straight.

Alternative Layouts
North Course: iRacing lists Virginia International Raceway – North Course (~3.621 km, 17 turns). Uses the northern section including the Climbing Esses, South Bend, and Oak Tree, rejoining via Patriot Course connectors—passing zones and lap-one compression differ where the layout cuts south. Turn 1 through the esses read similarly to the Full Course; rehearse your session's exact configuration so pit road and merge points match.
South Course: Virginia International Raceway – South Course (~2.655 km, 12 turns) focuses on the southern loop including the Roller Coaster and Hog Pen with a separate pit complex. Shorter sprints and club formats; Turn 1 and the NASCAR Bend section differ from Full Course entry points—do not assume identical braking markers.
Patriot Course: Virginia International Raceway – Patriot Course (~1.770 km, 12 turns) is the tight infield loop—ideal for rookies and licence content but extremely elevation-heavy for its length.
Grand West / Grand East: iRacing also offers extended layouts (~6.55 km Grand West, ~6.76 km Grand East) combining most of the Full Course with Patriot connectors for endurance-style laps. Overtaking and Defending
Best zones: Turn 1 (outbrake with overlap), Turn 3 chute (one clean left-side move), Oak Tree Turn 12 (inside if alongside after South Bend), back straight (left-side passes only—move right early to invite passes).
High-risk moves: Three-wide into Turn 1; alongside through the Climbing Esses or South Bend; late prototypes into Oak Tree; squeezing at Hog Pen when the attack is complete.
Defending: Break the tow before the back straight if rules allow; one-move principles at Turn 1 and Turn 12. On the back straight, hold right and make passes happen on your terms—reactive weaving left-right causes incidents.
Racecraft and Incident Avoidance
Crash magnets: Turn 1 lap 1 pileups; Turn 4a track-outs when carrying too much speed; Climbing Esses crest spins; South Bend tire wall when drivers fight instead of using runoff; Oak Tree Turn 12 runoff; Roller Coaster rear-ends under braking.
Lap 1: Survive Turn 1—brake early, leave a gap, do not pin to the apex mid-pack. Let the field stretch before attacking through the esses.
Survival strategy: In official races, finishing beats hero points—give one position to avoid a 1x that becomes a spin. After incidents, reset rhythm before leaning on South Bend again.
Traffic Management Tips
Faster class: Plan passes on the back straight and into Turn 1; use relative and radar. Brake earlier behind GTs at Turn 1 and Oak Tree; do not fill their mirror in the braking zone.
Slower class: Move right on the back straight early; hold predictable lines through the esses and South Bend. At Oak Tree, do not defend erratically—prototypes brake later and guess wrong.
When to back out: If you are not fully alongside before turn-in at Turn 1, Oak Tree, or Hog Pen, lift and slot in. Half moves in the esses or South Bend generate protests and DNFs.
Setup Advice
Aero: Medium downforce helps South Bend and the Climbing Esses without costing too much on the long straights—find the lowest wing that still rotates at Oak Tree without excessive understeer in the esses.
Brake bias: Enough forward bite for Turn 1 and Roller Coaster; if rears lock into Hog Pen, fix release technique before moving bias dramatically rearward. Re-check after fuel burn.
Traction / diff: Oak Tree and Hog Pen exits highlight diff settings—test on 15–20 lap runs. Soften preload slightly if the rear snaps on cold tyres at Turn 12.

Overheating: Aggressive Turn 1 and Oak Tree entries spike front temps; rear overheating follows traction abuse out of Turn 12 and Hog Pen if you slide.
Consistency: Smooth steering beats stabbing—especially over crests. Do not lift in South Bend purely to save tyres if it costs more time than a shorter stint.

Qualifying vs Race Pace
