Summit Point Motorsports Park (Main Circuit) is a 2.0 mile, 10-turn road course in West Virginia, USA. It is one of iRacing’s core free circuits and a staple of early licence progression. The layout mixes simple geometry with punishing grass and gravel run-offs—perfect for learning braking, rotation, and exit discipline.

Overview

10 turns, 2.0 miles (3.22 km). Key sections: the heavy braking into Turn 1; the fast Turn 3–4 sequence including NASCAR Bend; the critical Turn 5 (The 90) onto the back straight; the Carousel (T6–8); and the final Turn 10 right-hander back onto the main straight. Passing zones: Turn 1, Turn 3, Turn 5, and Turn 10 in lower classes.

Why This Track Is Difficult

Track limits, elevation change, and mixed-speed corner sequences make this layout hard to execute consistently over a race run. Most time is lost through compromised exits that carry all the way down the next straight.

Best Car Classes for This Track

Mazda: Teaches momentum and clean exits. GT3: Strong all-round race option with clear braking references. LMP3/LMP2: Faster classes gain most in flowing sectors but require disciplined traffic decisions at braking zones.

Sector and Corner Guide

Turn 1

Type: Heavy braking right, >90°. Gear: 2nd. Passing: Primary overtaking zone.

Braking: Hard, straight-line braking with a clear reference (start/finish gantry or brake boards, depending on series).

Line: Turn in late, trail brake to rotate the nose, and clip a late apex. Exit sets up the short run to Turn 2.

Common mistake: Turning in early and running out of road on exit, forcing a lift and compromising T2.

Turn 2

Type: Gentle left kink. Gear: 3rd–4th. Passing: Rare—single-file.

Technique: Treat this as part of the run into Turn 3. Stay smooth, keep the car balanced, and prioritise position for entry to T3.

Line: Use full track width and let the car flow; avoid steering corrections mid-corner.

Turn 3 / NASCAR Bend (Turn 4)

Type: Right-hander into a fast left. Gear: 3rd–4th. Passing: Possible with overlap into T3.

Technique: Brake for Turn 3, then carry speed through the right into the slightly banked NASCAR Bend left. The pairing rewards flow and confidence.

Line: Sacrifice a little entry into T3 to ensure you’re well-placed and stable for the left. Use kerbs with care—too much can unsettle the car.

Common mistake: Over-slowing for T3 and treating the combination as two separate corners. Think of it as one sequence.

Turn 5 – The 90

Type: Tight right onto the back straight. Gear: 2nd. Passing: One of the best overtaking points.

Braking: Medium to heavy braking. Trail enough to rotate, but focus on exit traction.

Line: Classic late-apex hairpin. Be patient on throttle—wheelspin kills speed onto the long straight.

Common mistake: Attacking the inside kerb aggressively and upsetting the rear, forcing a corrective lift.

Turn 6–8 – Carousel

Type: Long, tightening right-hand Carousel. Gear: 3rd. Passing: Mostly single-file; use to apply pressure.

Technique: Manage steering and throttle to keep the car balanced. The radius tightens—do not rush the middle of the corner.

Line: Start mid-track, edge toward a later apex as the corner tightens, and open the steering gradually as you exit.

Common mistake: Carrying too much speed on entry and running wide mid-corner, overheating the fronts and scrubbing lap time.

Turn 9

Type: Light kink or bend depending on car. Gear: 3rd–4th.

Technique: Keep the car settled and aligned for the braking into Turn 10. Any correction here makes Turn 10 harder.

Turn 10 – Final Corner

Type: Medium-speed right onto main straight. Gear: 3rd. Passing: Possible dive in lower splits; best used to set up passes into T1.

Braking: Short to medium braking. Brake in a straight line, release smoothly into turn-in.

Line: Late apex. You want the car pointed straight as early as possible to get a clean drive onto the straight.

Common mistake: Clipping the inside kerb too hard and bouncing the car out to the edge of the track.

Pit entry/exit

Pit entry: Typically from the right at the end of the main straight. Signal early, ease off the racing line, and respect the speed limiter line shown by cones and pit markings.

Pit exit: Rejoins along the inside of the main straight. Stay within the blend line until it ends; faster traffic will be at full speed on the racing line.

Fuel usage

Summit Point\'s short lap and frequent braking zones make fuel usage predictable. Expect moderate consumption for GT and touring cars. Use a conservative baseline for your car, then refine with a 10–15 lap run. To save fuel, short-shift out of Turn 5 and Turn 10, and roll a touch more off-throttle into Turns 1 and 3 rather than lifting mid-corner.

Tyre Management

The circuit surface is reasonably smooth, but repeated longitudinal loadings at Turns 1, 5, and 10 work the rears. The fronts are stressed in the Carousel (T6–8). Focus on smooth brake release and progressive throttle to protect the tyres. In longer races, adjust brake bias forward as the rears warm up.

Overtaking and Defending

  • Turn 1: Main overtaking point off the main straight; strong draft and heavy braking.
  • Turn 3: Possible if you get a better run through Turn 2; commit early and be fair on the inside.
  • Turn 5 (The 90): Exit of NASCAR Bend feeds a braking zone—prime spot for outbraking.
  • Turn 10: Risky but possible move; better used to set up a stronger exit and pass into Turn 1.

Traffic Management Tips

Faster classes: Expect slower cars to brake early into Turn 1, Turn 5, and Turn 10. The Carousel can bunch fields—plan passes on entry or exit, not mid-corner. Slower classes: Hold your line and avoid sudden changes under braking. Use the straights (start/finish and back straight) to let faster traffic clear.

Setup Advice

Summit Point rewards a stable rear under braking and good traction off slow corners. Too soft and the car can feel lazy in direction changes; too stiff and you will fight locked tyres and oversteer into Turns 1 and 5. Brake bias slightly forward for safety in rookies/low splits; move rearward as confidence grows. Differential settings that allow early throttle out of Turn 5 and Turn 10 without sudden oversteer are worth time.

iRacing may offer additional venue configurations for this circuit. Use this guide as the baseline for the primary/full road-course layout and re-check braking markers, overtaking windows, and off-track limits before running an alternate layout in officials or hosted sessions.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Beginner: Braking too late and sacrificing exits. Intermediate: Over-defending and losing run quality. Fix: Build repeatable markers, prioritize exits, and keep the car stable over kerbs and transitions.

Racecraft and Incident Avoidance

Lap 1 incidents usually come from late, reactive moves into heavy braking zones. Leave margin in opening laps, finish overtakes before turn-in points, and back out when overlap is incomplete.

Qualifying vs Race Pace

Qualifying: Maximize one-lap commitment and kerb usage. Race: Trade small peak pace for legal exits, tyre consistency, and predictable traffic behaviour over stints.

Final Tips

  • Biggest time gain: Prioritize corner exits that feed long acceleration zones.
  • Biggest race saver: Early, predictable decisions in traffic and braking phases.
  • Hardest section: The highest-speed commitment sequence with limited margin.
  • Best overtaking zone: The heaviest braking point after the longest straight.
Tip: Think exits first. Summit Point looks simple on paper, but lap time comes from how early you can go to full throttle at Turns 1, 5, and 10 without sliding. Nail those three exits and the lap comes to you.
