iRacing Sonoma Raceway – Sportscar Alt Track Guide
Sonoma Raceway (Sportscar Alt) is 2.52 miles of elevation change, blind crests, and one of the most distinctive corners in North American racing: The Carousel. The layout rewards smooth inputs and precise lines; off-camber and blind entries demand commitment. Used for sports car and GT series on iRacing.
Overview
12 turns, 2.52 miles (4.06 km). Key sectors: the climb through Turn 1 to the highest point at Turns 3/3A; the drop into Turn 4 and the run to The Carousel (Turn 6); the Carousel’s long off-camber constant radius; and the heavy braking for the Turn 11 hairpin. Passing zones: Turn 1 (lap 1), Turn 4, Turn 7, and Turn 11. Elevation and blind crests make reference points critical.

Why This Track Is Difficult
Track limits, elevation change, and mixed-speed corner sequences make this layout hard to execute consistently over a race run. Most time is lost through compromised exits that carry all the way down the next straight.
Best Car Classes for This Track
Mazda: Teaches momentum and clean exits. GT3: Strong all-round race option with clear braking references. LMP3/LMP2: Faster classes gain most in flowing sectors but require disciplined traffic decisions at braking zones.
Sector and Corner Guide
Turn 1
Type: Sweeping turn, uphill. Gear: 3rd–4th. Passing: Yes—lap 1.
Technique: The track climbs. Brake in a straight line, trail brake for rotation. Use full width on exit.
Line: Apex and accelerate onto the climb toward Turn 2. Blind exit in some cars—memorise the line.
Common mistake: Braking too late and running wide. Missing the apex kills speed up the hill.
Turns 2, 3 & 3A
Type: Sequence to the highest point of the track. Gear: 2nd–3rd.
Technique: Turns 3 and 3A sit at the crest. Short shift or lift as needed; the huge downhill run follows. Stay tight to the inside through 3A.
Common mistake: Carrying too much speed over the crest and washing out on the way down.
Turn 4
Type: Downhill braking zone. Gear: 2nd–3rd. Passing: Possible with overlap.
Braking: Heavy braking downhill. Trail brake for rotation. The car will want to run wide—control the front.
Line: Late apex. Exit sets up the run toward Turn 5 and The Carousel.
Turn 5
Type: Medium-speed turn. Gear: 3rd. Carry speed through; smooth throttle. Sets up the entry to The Carousel.
The Carousel (Turn 6)
Type: Long, constant-radius, off-camber turn. Gear: 2nd–3rd. Passing: Rare.
Technique: One of Sonoma’s signature corners. Off-camber and often bumpy. Late apex about two-thirds of the way around—apex too early and you run wide on exit. Progressive throttle; the corner opens. Do not rush the exit—it leads onto the main straight.
Line: Enter from the outside, clip the late apex at the bottom of the hill, use full track on exit. Memorise the reference; the corner is blind in places.
Common mistake: Early apex and running wide. Lifting mid-corner and killing exit speed onto the straight.
Turn 7 & 7A
Type: Right-hand sequence. Gear: 3rd–4th. Passing: Possible at the end of the straight.
Braking: From the straight, brake in a straight line. Trail brake into the first part.
Line: Flow through 7 and 7A. Exit leads to the next section.
Turns 8, 9 & 10
Medium- and slow-speed sequence. Stay smooth; avoid aggressive kerb use—Sonoma’s kerbs can unsettle the car. Turn 10 sets up the approach to the Turn 11 hairpin. Braking for Turn 11 is from high speed—reference your boards.
Turn 11 (Hairpin)
Type: Tight hairpin. Gear: 1st–2nd. Passing: Yes—main overtaking zone.
Braking: Heavy braking from the straight. One of the best passing opportunities on the track.
Line: Apex the inside. Use full track on exit for the run to Turn 12 and the start-finish straight.
Common mistake: Braking too late and overshooting. Poor exit kills speed down the straight.
Turn 12
Type: Final corner onto start-finish. Gear: 2nd–3rd. Clean exit is critical for lap time—maximise straight-line speed to Turn 1.
Pit entry and exit
Pit entry: Typically after Turn 12 or as designated for the Sportscar Alt layout. Stay off the racing line and signal. Check iRacing’s pit blend line for the exact merge point.
Pit exit: Rejoins before Turn 1 or as marked. Merge with care—traffic is at speed. Use mirrors and the blend line.
Fuel usage
Sonoma is 2.52 miles per lap with elevation and several heavy braking zones. Fuel consumption is moderate. Plan stints using your car’s per-lap burn. Short-shift on the main straight to save fuel when needed. Avoid lifting through The Carousel for fuel save—lap time loss is too large.
Alternative Layouts
iRacing may offer additional venue configurations for this circuit. Use this guide as the baseline for the primary/full road-course layout and re-check braking markers, overtaking windows, and off-track limits before running an alternate layout in officials or hosted sessions.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Beginner: Braking too late and sacrificing exits. Intermediate: Over-defending and losing run quality. Fix: Build repeatable markers, prioritize exits, and keep the car stable over kerbs and transitions.
Overtaking and Defending
- Turn 1: Lap 1 and restarts
- Turn 4: Possible with overlap from the downhill run
- Turn 7/7A: After the straight following The Carousel
- Turn 11: Best opportunity. Heavy braking; outbrake or defend
Racecraft and Incident Avoidance
Lap 1 incidents usually come from late, reactive moves into heavy braking zones. Leave margin in opening laps, finish overtakes before turn-in points, and back out when overlap is incomplete.
Traffic Management Tips
Faster classes: GTs and slower cars brake earlier for Turn 4, Turn 7, and Turn 11. Anticipate on the blind crests and downhill approaches. Slower classes: Be predictable. Use mirrors and relative. Let faster traffic past on the straight after The Carousel where safe.
Setup Advice
Balance the car for elevation changes—too stiff and the car will skip over crests; too soft and it will feel vague in The Carousel. Brake bias: favour rear for rotation into Turn 4 and Turn 11; move forward if the rears lock first. The Carousel rewards a stable rear—consider slightly less aggressive diff or rear bar if the car is loose on exit.
Tyre Management
Elevation and direction changes load the tyres unevenly. The Carousel and the Turn 11 hairpin are high wear. Front-left and rear-right take the most load on a clockwise lap. Manage wear by smoothing steering and throttle; avoid aggressive kerb strikes. In long stints, rears can go away first—adjust brake bias and throttle as grip drops.
Qualifying vs Race Pace
Qualifying: Maximize one-lap commitment and kerb usage. Race: Trade small peak pace for legal exits, tyre consistency, and predictable traffic behaviour over stints.

Final Tips
- Biggest time gain: Prioritize corner exits that feed long acceleration zones.
- Biggest race saver: Early, predictable decisions in traffic and braking phases.
- Hardest section: The highest-speed commitment sequence with limited margin.
- Best overtaking zone: The heaviest braking point after the longest straight.
