The Historic layout at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is 4.73 km (2.94 miles) with 13 turns. It uses the original 1991-era configuration—no final chicane, so the lap flows directly onto the pit straight from the last corner. Used in Super Formula, F3, GT4, TCR, and IMSA Pilot Challenge. The circuit combines a long front straight with flowing curves, heavy braking zones, and blind corners.

Overview

The lap starts on the 1 km pit straight. Turn 1 is the primary overtaking zone. The middle sector flows: Turn 3 (long right), Turn 4 Repsol (right), Turn 5 (left), Turn 6 (right), then the TV3 section—Turn 7 (left), Turn 8 (right)—and Turn 9 (long right). Turn 10 (La Caixa) is the sharp left hairpin and hardest braking zone. The final sector (Turns 11–13) is right-right-right onto the straight; pit entry is after Turn 12. Passing zones: Turn 1 (lap 1), Turn 3 (with overlap), Turn 8, and Turn 10.

Why This Track Is Difficult

Track limits, elevation change, and mixed-speed corner sequences make this layout hard to execute consistently over a race run. Most time is lost through compromised exits that carry all the way down the next straight.

Best Car Classes for This Track

Mazda: Teaches momentum and clean exits. GT3: Strong all-round race option with clear braking references. LMP3/LMP2: Faster classes gain most in flowing sectors but require disciplined traffic decisions at braking zones.

Sector and Corner Guide

Turn 1 (Elf)

Type: 90° right, heavy braking. Gear: 2nd. Passing: Yes—primary overtaking zone.

Braking: Just before the 100m board. Cars arrive at 300 km/h—brake heavily, scrubbing ~50% of speed. Trail brake for rotation.

Line: Late apex. Use the inside kerb for grip. Smooth throttle on exit—leads into the left-right Turn 2–3 complex.

Common mistake: Braking too late and overshooting. Missing the apex kills exit speed. Lap 1 chaos—leave margin.

Turn 2

Left kink. Sets up Turn 3.

Turn 3

Type: Long, sweeping right. Gear: 3rd–4th. Passing: Possible with overlap.

Technique: One of the most demanding corners. Tests car balance and downforce. Enter on a tighter line than you might expect—you can carry more speed. Maintain throttle through the corner. Smooth steering. The exit leads uphill.

Common mistake: Over-slowing and losing flow. Running wide on exit. Turn 3 rewards commitment—trust the car.

Turn 4 (Repsol)

Type: Right. Gear: 3rd–4th.

Technique: Quick right. Carry speed through. Sets up Turn 5.

Turn 5

Type: Left. Gear: 3rd.

Technique: Trail brake for rotation. The track rises—weight transfer affects grip. Smooth inputs.

Turn 6

Type: Right. Gear: 3rd.

Technique: Leads into the TV3 section (Turns 7–8). Maintain rhythm.

Turns 7–8 (TV3)

Turn 7: Left. Turn 8: Right. Gear: 2nd–3rd. Passing: Turn 8 possible with overlap.

Technique: Left-right sequence. Brake and trail brake for Turn 7. Use the kerbs carefully. Turn 8: trail brake for rotation. The track descends toward Turn 9. Smooth throttle on exit.

Turn 9

Type: Long, sweeping right. Gear: 3rd–4th.

Technique: Significant arc. The track descends. Carry speed—this corner leads onto the long straight before Turn 10. Sets up the heavy braking zone for La Caixa.

Turn 10 (La Caixa)

Type: Sharp left, hardest braking on the track. Gear: 2nd. Passing: Yes.

Braking: Cars arrive at ~300 km/h. Brake at the 100m board. Take the corner at ~70 km/h. Heavy braking—the biggest drop in speed on the lap.

Line: Late apex. The Historic layout uses the original, faster arc (pre-2004 chicane style). Trail brake for rotation. Smooth throttle on exit—leads onto the straight.

Common mistake: Braking too late and overshooting. Locking up under heavy braking. Poor exit kills lap time onto the straight.

Turns 11–13 (Final Sector)

The final turns before the pit straight. Turn 11 is a right. Turn 12 is a right—just before the pit entry (the pit lane branches off after Turn 12). Turn 13 is the final right (Catalunya) before the line. No chicane in the Historic layout—the track flows directly onto the straight. Use full track on exit. Exit speed from Turn 13 determines straight-line speed and lap time.

Pit entry and exit

Pit entry: After Turn 12, the pit lane branches off to the left before Turn 13 (Catalunya). Signal and move off the racing line in good time. Do not cut across traffic on the approach to the final corner.

Pit exit: Rejoins the main track on the left side of the pit straight, before Turn 1. Merge with care—traffic is at high speed. Check mirrors and use the blend line.

Fuel usage

Barcelona Historic is 4.73 km per lap with a long pit straight and heavy braking at Turn 1 and Turn 10. Fuel consumption is moderate to high. Plan stints using your car's per-lap burn. Short-shift on the main straight to save fuel when needed; avoid lifting in Turn 3 for fuel save—lap time loss is too large.

Alternative Layouts

iRacing may offer additional venue configurations for this circuit. Use this guide as the baseline for the primary/full road-course layout and re-check braking markers, overtaking windows, and off-track limits before running an alternate layout in officials or hosted sessions.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Beginner: Braking too late and sacrificing exits. Intermediate: Over-defending and losing run quality. Fix: Build repeatable markers, prioritize exits, and keep the car stable over kerbs and transitions.

Overtaking and Defending

  • Turn 1: Best opportunity. Outbrake into the corner. Lap 1 and restarts
  • Turn 3: Possible with overlap from Turn 1
  • Turn 8: Possible with overlap
  • Turn 10: Heavy braking. Outbrake or defend

Racecraft and Incident Avoidance

Lap 1 incidents usually come from late, reactive moves into heavy braking zones. Leave margin in opening laps, finish overtakes before turn-in points, and back out when overlap is incomplete.

Traffic Management Tips

Prototypes: GTs brake much earlier at Turn 1 and Turn 10. Anticipate. The middle sector is tight—patience pays. GTs: Use mirrors and relative. Be predictable. Let faster cars past on the straights where safe.

Setup Advice

Balance high-speed stability (Turn 3, Turn 9) with rotation into Turn 1 and Turn 10. Brake bias: favour rear for Turn 1 and La Caixa; move forward if rears lock first. Enough downforce for Turn 3 and the middle sector without sacrificing too much speed on the main straight. Slightly stiffer rear can help Turn 3 and Turn 9; avoid an overly nervous car into Turn 10.

Tyre Management

Front-left and rear-right take the most load: long rights (Turn 3, Turn 9) and heavy braking at Turn 1 and Turn 10 (La Caixa). The middle sector has a mix of directions. Manage wear by smoothing steering and throttle; avoid aggressive kerb use. In long stints, rears can go away first; adjust brake bias and throttle application as grip drops.

Qualifying vs Race Pace

Qualifying: Maximize one-lap commitment and kerb usage. Race: Trade small peak pace for legal exits, tyre consistency, and predictable traffic behaviour over stints.

Historic vs GP Layout

The Historic layout omits the Europcar chicane in the final sector. The modern GP layout has an additional chicane (Turn 13) before the final corner; the Historic flows directly from Turn 12 to the final corner (Catalunya) and onto the pit straight. The lap is shorter and faster.

Final Tips

  • Biggest time gain: Prioritize corner exits that feed long acceleration zones.
  • Biggest race saver: Early, predictable decisions in traffic and braking phases.
  • Hardest section: The highest-speed commitment sequence with limited margin.
  • Best overtaking zone: The heaviest braking point after the longest straight.
Tip: Barcelona rewards smooth flow. Turn 3 and Turn 10 (La Caixa) are the key corners—master them and the lap time will follow. Exit speed from Turn 13 (Catalunya) is critical for the main straight.

Next: Spa, Daytona, Bathurst, or Adelaide.
