Trail braking extends threshold braking into the corner. Instead of releasing the brakes completely before turn-in, you maintain brake pressure while turning and gradually release it as you approach the apex. This helps the car rotate and sets up a faster exit.

Why Trail Brake?

  • Rotation – Brake pressure keeps weight on the front tyres, increasing front grip and helping the car turn
  • Later braking – You can brake deeper into the corner, reducing straight-line braking distance
  • Faster exits – A smoother transition from brake to throttle improves traction on exit

How to Trail Brake

Start with maximum brake pressure in a straight line. As you turn in, begin releasing the brakes progressively. The release should be smooth—not a sudden lift. By the apex, you should be off the brakes and ready to apply throttle.

Corner Type Matters

  • Tight hairpins – More initial brake pressure, longer trail. You need more rotation
  • 90-degree turns – Moderate trail. Balance braking and rotation
  • Fast sweepers – Less or no trail braking. Often a lift or light brake is enough

Common Mistakes

  • Releasing too early – The car runs wide. Keep more brake into the corner
  • Releasing too late or too abruptly – The rear can step out as weight transfers forward
  • Trail braking every corner – Fast corners often need a different approach. Use trail braking where it helps rotation
Tip: Focus on one corner at a time. Pick a hairpin or slow corner, practice the brake release curve, and compare telemetry to a reference lap. Small adjustments make a big difference.

Combining with Braking Techniques

Trail braking builds on threshold braking. You must be able to brake at the limit in a straight line before adding turn-in. Master the basics first, then layer in trail braking.
