iRacing Safety Rating Guide
Safety Rating (SR) measures how cleanly you drive. It ranges from 0.00 to 4.99 and determines whether you can be promoted to the next licence. Understanding incident points and how SR is calculated will help you improve faster.
What is Safety Rating?
Safety Rating is based on your performance across approximately the last 1,000 corners completed in official sessions (races, qualifying, time trials). Practice sessions do not affect your SR. The system uses a ratio of incident points to corners completed: more clean corners raise your SR; incidents lower it.
Incident Points Explained
Incidents are assigned point values:
- 0x – Light contact (noted but no points added)
- 1x – Off track or exceeding track limits
- 2x – Loss of control (spin), contact with barriers or walls
- 4x – Heavy contact with another car (paved racing). In dirt disciplines, car contact is often 2x
If multiple incidents occur in quick succession, only the highest value is counted. For example, a 2x followed immediately by a 4x is recorded as 4x (shown as "2x → 4x").
Corners Per Incident
Your SR is a rolling average. Completing more corners without incidents increases the ratio; incidents decrease it. Longer races (more corners) give more opportunity to build SR, but a single big incident can wipe out gains. Consistency matters more than occasional perfect laps.
Promotion Thresholds
- 3.00+ – Qualifies for promotion at season end; 3.0+ with MPR can fast-track
- 4.00+ – May trigger instant promotion when combined with MPR
- When crossing whole-number values (e.g. 2.00 to 3.00), an extra ±0.40 adjustment is applied to reduce constant fluctuation near promotion boundaries
How to Improve Your Safety Rating
- Practice until you can run 20+ consecutive laps with zero incidents before racing
- Give other cars plenty of room; avoid fighting for position in rookies
- Slow down when you see incidents ahead instead of driving through
- Use time trials to build SR in a risk-free environment (no other cars)
- Stay in the session until the end—never quit
