Qualifying sets your starting position. A good grid spot reduces first-lap risk and gives you cleaner air. Getting the most from qualifying means managing tyres, traffic, and session format.

Session Formats

iRacing uses different qualifying formats. Open qualifying runs alongside the race session—you can qualify and race in the same session. Split qualifying in some series means you qualify in a separate session. Know the format before you join.

Tyre Warm-Up

  • Out lap – Build heat gradually. Do not spin the tyres or lock brakes
  • First flyer – Often not your best. Tyres may need one more lap to peak
  • Second flyer – Usually the optimal lap. Tyres are warm, car is balanced
  • Third lap – Tyres can overheat. Pace may drop. Know your car's window

Traffic Management

In open qualifying, traffic is common. Leave a gap to the car ahead so you get a clear lap. If someone is on a flyer behind you, consider letting them past so they do not ruin your lap and you do not ruin theirs. Use the out lap to find space.

Lap Management

  • Do not abort a lap unless you have a major error. Finish it—you might still improve
  • One clean lap beats three scrappy attempts
  • If you improve, stay out for another lap if time allows. Tyres may still be good
  • Know when to pit. Overheating tyres or low fuel means come in

Mindset

Qualifying is about maximising one or two laps. Be aggressive but smooth. Small mistakes cost more in quali than in a race lap. Practice your quali routine in the practice session before.

Tip: In fixed-setup series, everyone has the same car. Your quali time comes from driving, not setup. Focus on nailing the lap.
