Overtaking is about timing, positioning, and commitment. A clean pass leaves both cars intact and avoids incident points. The best overtakes happen when you are clearly faster and pick the right moment.

When to Attack

  • Pace advantage – You are consistently faster. Do not force a pass if you are matched
  • Clear passing zones – Long straights, heavy braking zones, or corners where you can get overlap before turn-in
  • Defender's mistake – They run wide, lock up, or miss an apex. Capitalise without dive-bombing
  • Patience – Sometimes waiting a few corners for a better opportunity saves a 4x

Passing Zones

The best places to pass: long straights with DRS/slipstream, corners with heavy braking (e.g. Spa Bus Stop, Monza T1), and corners where the inside line is viable. Avoid passing in high-speed sweepers or blind corners where the defender cannot see you.

Clean Overtake Principles

  • Get overlap before turn-in – Your front axle alongside their rear axle gives you the right to space
  • Commit or back out – Half-committing causes contact. Either complete the move or lift
  • Leave space – If you are alongside, the defender must leave room. You must also leave room on exit
  • No dive-bombing – Braking later is fine if you make the corner. Missing the apex and hitting the defender is not

What to Avoid

  • Dive-bombing from too far back
  • Forcing a pass when there is no gap
  • Expecting the defender to yield when you have no overlap
  • Contact as a "racing incident" when you could have lifted
Tip: A failed pass that results in a 4x costs more than waiting one more lap for a clean opportunity.
