The Global Mazda MX-5 Cup is iRacing's primary rookie road car. Free, forgiving, and fun, it teaches fundamentals without aero or ABS. Most new drivers start here—it is the ideal introduction to road racing.

Car Characteristics

  • Engine: Skyactiv-G 2.0L inline-4, ~181 bhp. No turbo, linear power delivery
  • Weight: ~975 kg dry. Light and nimble
  • Transmission: Sequential, no clutch required. Shift at ~7400 RPM when lights flash
  • Assists: None. ABS and TC off—teaches threshold braking and throttle control

Why Start Here

The MX-5 rewards smooth inputs. Mistakes are visible but not catastrophic. You learn racecraft, braking, and car control in a forgiving environment. The fixed setup series means everyone races equal equipment—you focus on driving, not tuning.

Driving Tips

  • Braking: No ABS—learn to brake hard without locking. See our Braking Techniques Guide
  • Throttle: Smooth application on exit. Stabbing the throttle will spin the rear
  • Weight transfer: Light car—braking and steering affect balance. Brake in a straight line where possible
  • Kerb use: Generally forgiving, but aggressive kerb strikes can unsettle the car

Series

The FANATEC Global Mazda MX-5 Cup runs fixed setups. Races are short and frequent. Focus on finishing clean, building Safety Rating, and learning racecraft before chasing wins.

Progression Path

The MX-5 Cup is your Rookie Sports Car series. iRacing splits Road into Sports Car and Formula licences—this path covers Sports Car (cars with fenders). Once you earn your D licence, follow this path to A:

  • Rookie: FANATEC Global Mazda MX-5 Cup (you are here). Complete 2 races or 4 Time Trials and reach Safety Rating 3.0+ to promote.
  • D-Class: Ferrari 296 Challenge, Production Car Sim-Lab Challenge (MX-5, GR86, Clio, BMW M2), BMW M2 Cup, or Toyota GR86 Cup. See our BMW M2 Guide.
  • C-Class: Falken Tyre Sports Car Challenge (GT4 + LMP3 multi-class), GT4 Falken Tyre Challenge – Fixed, Proto/GT Challenge, or IMSA Sportscar Endurance Challenge. See our GT3 Guide and LMP3 Guide.
  • B-Class: LMP2 Challenge – Fixed, Prototype Challenge – Fixed (LMDh/GTP), iRacing GT3 Regional Tour, or FANATEC GT3 Challenge. See our LMP2 Guide.
  • A-Class: IMSA iRacing Series (GTP, LMP2, GT3), IMSA Endurance Series, or Global Endurance Tour. See our Endurance Guide.
Tip: Practice solo sessions before entering races. Learn the track, hit your braking points, and build consistency. Racecraft comes with seat time.
