Lap analysis is how you turn "I feel slow here" into clear, repeatable improvements. The goal is not to copy a reference lap blindly. The goal is to understand where you lose time, why it happens, and what one specific change will move your next stint forward.

What to Measure First

Before details, identify where time is actually being lost.

  • Sector deltas: find the biggest losses first.
  • Corner delta trend: check if the loss starts on entry, mid-corner, or exit.
  • Speed trace shape: compare your minimum speed and acceleration timing to a faster lap.

Baseline Analysis Setup

Entry, Mid, Exit Framework

Entry

Look at brake timing, peak brake pressure, and release rate. Many drivers lose time by braking early and then coasting, or by releasing too abruptly and forcing extra steering correction.

Mid-corner

Check steering stability and minimum speed consistency. If your mid-corner speed is low but steering angle is high, you are likely over-slowing or carrying poor line geometry from the entry phase.

Exit

Exit is usually where the biggest lap-time gains live. Compare throttle pickup timing and throttle ramp rate. Earlier, smoother throttle almost always beats a late spike to 100%.

Tip: Do not change three corners at once. Fix one corner pattern, run a short test, and verify the delta moved in the right direction.

Repeatable Lap Analysis Workflow

  1. Run 5 to 8 clean laps in a consistent fuel and tyre condition.
  2. Select one reference lap (teammate, telemetry platform, or your own best valid lap).
  3. Pick the two largest time-loss corners only.
  4. For each corner, diagnose entry, mid, and exit in that order.
  5. Apply one adjustment per corner (brake point, release profile, line, or throttle timing).
  6. Re-test and compare; keep what works, discard what does not.

Common Mistakes

  • Chasing top speed instead of corner exit quality.
  • Comparing laps with different fuel loads or tyre states.
  • Using invalid laps with off-tracks as references.
  • Changing setup before confirming the issue is actually driving technique.

When to Use Setup Changes

If the same weakness appears across multiple clean laps, then consider setup. If it appears on one lap only, it is usually execution. Use lap analysis to separate driver inputs from car-balance limitations.
