iRacing Incident Avoidance Guide
Incident points hurt your Safety Rating. Avoiding contact is often the smartest move—even when you have the right to space. Reading situations and anticipating trouble before it happens saves SR and finishes.
Reading Situations
- Relative and mirrors – Check who is behind and how fast they are closing. Plan ahead
- Lap 1 – Expect chaos. Brake early, leave margin, and survive. Positions are gained later
- Rejoining cars – Someone spinning or off track may rejoin unpredictably. Lift and give space
- Slower cars – In multi-class or lapped traffic, anticipate where they will be. Avoid last-second moves
When to Yield
You may have the right to space, but if the other driver is not giving it, contact is likely. Sometimes yielding—lifting, taking the outside line, or letting them have the corner—avoids a 4x and keeps you in the race. A 4x and damaged car is worse than losing one position.
High-Risk Moments
- Lap 1, turn 1 – Packed field, cold tyres. Extra caution
- Restarts – Similar to lap 1. Do not assume others will brake on time
- Last lap – Desperate moves happen. Defend fairly but expect aggression
- Multi-class traffic – Faster cars may dive. Be predictable; they will go where you are not
Rejoining Safely
If you spin or go off, rejoin safely. Check traffic before moving. Do not pull back onto the racing line in front of oncoming cars. Wait for a gap. Unsafe rejoins are protestable and cause avoidable contact.
