Fuel saving can extend stint length, reduce pit stops, or recover from a fuel miscalculation. Lift-and-coast, short-shifting, and smooth driving all reduce consumption. Balance pace and economy.

Lift-and-Coast

Lift off the throttle before the braking zone and coast into the corner. You use less fuel and less brake. The time loss depends on how early you lift—typically 0.1–0.3s per corner. On long straights, a short lift before braking is often enough.

Short-Shifting

Shift up before the redline. Lower revs mean less fuel. Shift 500–1000 rpm early on acceleration to save fuel with minimal lap time loss. Practice to find the sweet spot per car and track.

Smooth Driving

Aggressive throttle and braking waste fuel. Smooth application and release are more efficient. Bonus: smooth driving also preserves tyres.

Stint Length Optimisation

Use practice telemetry to measure fuel burn. Strategy tools calculate maximum stint length with a safety margin (e.g. 0.9L remaining). One fewer stop can win a race—or save a race when fuel was underestimated.

Tip: Practice fuel-saving laps before the race. Know how much you can save per lap and what the lap time cost is.
