Field of view (FOV) determines how much of the track you see and how accurately you judge distance and speed. Correct FOV matches your screen size and eye distance—it may feel zoomed in at first, but it improves braking markers, corner entry, and overall feel.

Why FOV Matters

FOV affects how the 3D world is projected onto your 2D screen. Too wide (high FOV) and distant objects look smaller than they should—you lose depth perception. Too narrow (low FOV) and you see less of the track. The correct value matches the geometry of your setup: screen width and distance from your eyes.

What You Need to Measure

  • Screen width: The horizontal width of your display in cm or inches (not diagonal). For triples, measure one monitor's width
  • Eye distance: Distance from your eyes to the centre of the screen (or centre monitor for triples)
  • Setup type: Single monitor, triple monitors, or ultrawide

Typical Values

Single 27" monitor at ~60 cm: roughly 55–65°. Single 32" at ~70 cm: roughly 60–70°. Triple 27" at 65 cm with 30° side angles: roughly 84–90°. These are approximations—measure your setup and use a calculator for accuracy.

Setting FOV in iRacing

  • Options → Display: Set Field of View to the value from your calculator
  • In-sim: Use [ and ] keys to adjust FOV while driving
  • Seat position: Ctrl+F12 opens the camera tool. Adjust seat position (forward/back, up/down) separately from FOV—it does not change the FOV angle
  • Avoid Auto: Set FOV manually. Auto does not account for your exact setup

Triple Monitors

Enable "Render 3 Screens" in graphics settings. Enter the correct resolution and bezel width if your calculator supports it. The side monitors extend the horizontal FOV—the calculator will output a higher value than for a single screen. Ensure your monitor angles and distances are correct in the calculator.

Tip: Correct FOV often feels zoomed in initially. Stick with it—your brain adapts, and distance perception improves. Moving your screen closer allows a wider (correct) FOV and more peripheral vision.
