Force feedback conveys tyre load, grip, kerbs, and steering weight. Good FFB helps you feel the limit and catch slides. Poor FFB—clipping, too weak, or too numb—hides critical information. This guide covers tuning for better car feel.

What FFB Conveys

iRacing sends steering forces based on tyre load, slip angle, and track surface. You feel weight build as you turn in, lightening at the limit, and kerb impacts. The goal is to preserve that detail without clipping (hitting your wheel's torque limit) or drowning it in noise.

Clipping

Clipping occurs when the sim demands more torque than your wheel can produce. The signal flattens—you lose detail and get a "numb" or "mushy" feel at high load. Use the in-sim FFB meter (F9 or Options → Graphics) to monitor. Occasional red during heavy braking or kerb strikes is acceptable; sustained red in normal corners means you are clipping too often.

  • Fix: Lower Max Force, or increase Wheel Force if your wheelbase can handle more
  • Wheel Force: Set to your wheelbase's max Nm. Tells iRacing your hardware limit
  • Max Force: Intensity multiplier. Start at 0.5 and reduce until clipping is rare

Linear Mode

Enable for direct drive wheels. Linear mode gives a 1:1 mapping—no boosting of small forces. Direct drive wheels have enough torque and resolution to reproduce subtle feedback. For gear-driven or belt-driven wheels (Logitech G29, Thrustmaster T300), leave Linear Mode off—the non-linear curve boosts small forces so you can feel them through the gear/belt friction.

Min Force

For direct drive, set Min Force to 0. It adds a constant offset that can mask subtle feedback. For older or weaker wheels, a small Min Force (e.g. 2–5%) can reduce dead zone at centre—use only if you feel a "notch" or lack of feel around straight.

Damping & Smoothing

Damping adds resistance to quick wheel movement. It can reduce oscillation and harshness on direct drive wheels. Start at 0; add 5–15% if the wheel feels too sharp or oscillates. Smoothing filters high-frequency noise. Use sparingly—too much dulls kerb and surface detail. Reduce Force When Parked is recommended to avoid strain when stationary.

Wheel-Type Summary

  • Direct drive: Linear on, Min Force 0, Damping 0–15%, Smoothing low or 0
  • Belt-driven: Linear off, tune Max Force to avoid clipping
  • Gear-driven: Linear off, higher damping can help mask gear notchiness

Troubleshooting

  • Too weak: Increase Max Force. Check Wheel Force matches your wheelbase Nm
  • Too strong / clipping: Decrease Max Force. Monitor F9 meter
  • Oscillating / shaking: Add Damping. Reduce Smoothing if it was high
  • Numb / no detail: Likely clipping. Lower Max Force. Ensure Linear on for DD
Tip: Test on a track with varied corners and kerbs—e.g. Spa or Sebring. You want to feel weight transfer, kerb impacts, and the onset of slip without constant clipping.
