Driver swaps in iRacing team endurance events follow a simple procedure: the outgoing driver exits in the pit stall, the incoming driver clicks [Drive], and a mandatory 30-second timer runs before the new driver can leave. Understanding the mechanics and the fair share rule avoids DQs and keeps handovers smooth.

Handover Procedure

  1. Outgoing driver brings the car into the team pit stall and comes to a complete stop
  2. Outgoing driver exits using ESC or the Car Reset control. This removes them from the car and leaves the car in the pit stall
  3. Incoming driver clicks [Drive] to get into the car
  4. 30-second timer starts when the car stops in the pit stall. The incoming driver cannot drive away until it expires. No need to rush—the timer runs during pit service too

The 30-Second Driver-Swap Timer

The timer starts when the car comes to a stop in the pit stall. It counts down whether or not pit service (fuel, tyres) is being performed. There is no advantage to exiting or entering quickly; take your time. The timer does not run while the car is being towed to the pit stall or while a penalty is being served.

Fair Share Rule

Official iRacing team sessions require each driver to complete a "fair share" of laps. A fair share is 1/4 of an equal share. An equal share = total race laps ÷ number of drivers (rounded down). Fair share = 0.25 × equal share (rounded up to the next full lap).

Example: 200-lap race, 2 drivers. Equal share = 100 laps each. Fair share = 25 laps each. If Driver A drives 20 laps and Driver B drives 180, the team is disqualified.

The F1/Lap Info and F3/Relative black boxes show a fair share indicator: n/r(R) where n = laps driven, r = current required, R = estimated final required. Red = not enough yet; yellow = enough for now; green = enough for estimated race distance. In time-limited races, the required laps are estimated and can change—do not wait until the final stint to put a driver in, or they may not have enough laps left to meet the requirement.

Remove Driver (Emergency Only)

If the current driver goes AFK or cannot exit, teammates can use [Remove Driver] to pull them from the car. The car must be stopped in the pit stall for at least 5 seconds before this button appears. Generally, let the driver exit on their own; use this only when necessary.

Pre-Race Preparation

  • Run a comms check (Discord, etc.) before the session
  • Practice pit entry and driver swap procedure in a test session
  • Confirm stint order and fair share targets. Plan so every driver meets their minimum early
  • Add roughly 2 minutes to strategy for pit transition and handover

Handover Communication

Keep comms brief. Outgoing driver: "Pitting this lap" or "Next lap confirmed." Quick handover of tyre feel and fuel usage to the incoming driver. One spotter/strategist should manage pit timing and fair share tracking.

Tip: Meet fair share early. If a driver crashes out or cannot continue, the team is DQ'd if any declared driver has not driven their fair share.

Next: Team Communication for spotter and strategist roles, Stint Strategy for planning driver rotations, or Fatigue Management for rest and staying sharp.
